Parking Lot Blaze In San Jose Leaves One Dead

SAN JOSE (CBS SF/BCN) -- San Jose fire crews knocked out a fire Monday morning involving several vehicles in a downtown parking garage and found one body, fire officials said.

The blaze was reported around 9:15 a.m. at a parking structure in the 100 block of West Hedding Street, near Santa Clara County Superior Court, according to a San Jose fire dispatcher.

Firefighters located one person in the driver's seat of one of the vehicles, who was found dead, San Jose Fire Cpt. Reggie Williams said.

Crews had knocked down the blaze but remained on the scene as of shortly before 10 a.m.

San Jose Fire Cpt. Reggie Williams told KCBS that that prior to the fire there may have been a vehicle collision but said he wasn't certain what caused it.

When the first fire fighting crews arrived, they found one car "heavily involved," Williams said.

"San Jose PD is on scene and they'll be taking over the investigation from here," Williams said.

Parts of the garage are closed off for the investigation but were allowing some people to pick up their cars--as long as it didn't interfere with police.
