Man Accused Of Killing 14-Year-Old In San Leandro Hit & Run Denied Bail In 1st Court Appearance

HAYWARD (KCBS)— A 34-year-old man arrested for last week's hit-and-run death of a San Lorenzo boy made his first court appearance Tuesday at the Hayward Hall of Justice, where he was denied bail and ordered to return to court the next morning.

Sonny Anderson of San Lorenzo appeared in court for just five minutes a little after 2 p.m. for his arraignment on four felony counts including second-degree murder, hit-and-run, as well as evading police for the November 11th death of 14-year-old Ivan Cruz, who was riding his scooter at an East 14th Street crosswalk in San Leandro.

Anderson hung his head low as he was escorted in by sheriff's deputies. Police said Anderson was in a maroon Saturn, fleeing from deputies who were trying to stop him from a traffic violation and that that's when Cruz was struck. He was then found by police hiding in a friend's Newark garage the next day.

Before ordering no bail, the judge listed Anderson's previous convictions, which included one for animal cruelty when he stabbed and mutilated animals at a petting zoo as an 18-year-old. Another involved the beating of a female elderly neighbor in 2008. He also had a conviction for auto theft on his record.

Anderson had been on probation when he hit Cruz, who was a freshman at San Lorenzo High School. The judge revoked Anderson's probation and referred him to the Public Defender's office to retain an attorney. In the meantime, he's being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail. The judge ordered the no-bail hold to continue.

His next court appearance is Wednesday at 9 a.m.
