Friends Ask Police To Do More At Vigil For Man Killed Over Phone In San Francisco's Duboce Park

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Friends of a man robbed and shot to death in San Francisco's Duboce Triangle neighborhood held a vigil Monday night and called on police to do more to control the growing number of violent crimes in a normally tranquil area.

San Francisco police said Michael Marquez and two friends were robbed by a group of five men who shot Marquez in the chest before taking off in a dark-colored sedan. The robbery and shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Monday near Henry and Noe streets. The 22-year-old shooting victim died at San Francisco General Hospital.

Jairo Rivera, Tim Twyman, Qais Harrun were among the friends participating in the vigil. They told KPIX-5 that they're struggling to understand why the attackers decided to kill Marquez over a cell phone, a wallet and a backpack.

"They told all of them to get down to your knees and empty your pockets. I guess Mike didn't comply as well as they wanted him to, so they felt they had the need to shoot him," Rivera said.

"How could you destroy friends and family or anything for what…a piece of plastic?" Twyman said.

No arrests have been made in the case, and police have not released any descriptions of possible suspects.

"It's atrocious. They need to find the people who did it because someone with that much disregard for human life doesn't deserve to be walking out in public," said Harrun.

It's the second murder in that part of San Francisco this year. Last August, a man was stabbed to death. There have been no arrests in that case either.
