Tunnels North Of Golden Gate Bridge May Finally Get Named After Robin Williams
SAN RAFAEL (KCBS)— State Assemblyman Marc Levine (D-San Rafael) has formally proposed legislation that would name the highway tunnels near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge after Robin Williams.
The actor committed suicide in his Tiburon home August 11th after bouts of addiction, depression and other mental illness and disease.
Despite the public's perception, the tunnels really have no official name at all. Levine said the twin tunnels with rainbow arches are the perfect landmark to name after the comedian.
"He was not just an internationally renowned celebrity he was engaged in community. He grew up in Marin. He participated in civic life in Marin and of course his professional career really began in San Francisco and the tunnel is a real connector for those two lives," he said.
After receiving the blessings from Williams' family and collecting 57,000 online petition signatures, Levine formally proposed legislation naming the tunnels, the "Robin Williams Tunnels".
Caltrans says the stretch of U.S. 101 from the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito never officially had a name. It has been nicknamed Waldo Tunnel for Waldo Point, which is in turn named after William Waldo, a mid-19th century California politician.
