1 Dead, Another Hurt In 3-Car Crash On I-580 In Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A crash between three cars on Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland Sunday morning left one person dead and sent another to the hospital with major injuries.

Officers said a red Toyota Celica, around 1:30 a.m., collided with the center divider on the westbound side of the interstate near Lakeshore Avenue.

A silver BMW 745i then crashed into the Toyota, which was stopped in the roadway and was facing the wrong direction.

Officials said the driver of the Toyota was struck and killed by the BMW while standing outside his car.

Officers reported the driver of the BMW abandoned the vehicle and left the scene on foot.

When law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, they found a white Chevy Cobalt that was also involved in the crash.

Officers said the preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Cobalt, identified as Tyrone Elbeck Jr., 25, of Oakland, swerved to avoid crashing into the BMW and Toyota but collided with the center highway divider. He suffered major injuries in the crash. Officers said he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The CHP closed the highway as crews worked the scene. All lanes have since been reopened.

The CHP is asking anyone with information about the driver of the BMW to call an anonymous phone line at 1-800-TELL-CHP. The coroner will release the identity of the driver killed after the driver's next of kin is notified.
