MARIN COUNTY (CBS SF) – As the worst storm in years approaches the Bay Area, emergency officials in Marin County announced Wednesday that they are out of sand for residents and businesses to use for flood prevention.

According to Lt. Doug Pittman at the Marin County Emergency Operation Center, the county ordered 100 tons of sand and ran out a few hours ago.

"There is no agency in the county, whether it's law fire or public works that has any supply left," Pittman told KPIX 5.

Pittman said they have placed an emergency order of with a contractor. The latest order is also 100 tons and is expected to arrive around 5:00 a.m. Thursday.

People who were not able to get sand from the county told KPIX 5 they are using sand from the beach for sandbags.

Marin County deputies said they are hearing reports of people who took the free sand and are trying to sell it.
