2 Downed Power Poles, Transformer Damage 3 Mobile Homes In South San Jose

SAN JOSE (KCBS)— Two power poles came down on two different mobile homes in South San Jose at the Villa Teresa Mobile Community Monday morning. A transformer damaged one of the homes and a third undamaged mobile home was evacuated, but everyone escaped injury according to the fire department.

At 8:23 a.m., a vehicle struck an electrical pole on Allen Avenue, causing the pole to fall and pull a second pole down into the Villa Teresa Mobile Community near Santa Teresa Boulevard and Coleman Road, PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said.

The fallen poles triggered an outage affecting 1,200 customers in the area, Sarkissian said.

One pole crashed through the roof of the mobile home and the other went through a carport's metal awning.

According to fire department Battalion Chief Rick Seal the transformer did damage to the roof and live wires were down on one of the homes.

"We had to evacuate three people. One was an elderly couple with some special needs and we're in the process of finding shelter for those folks through Red Cross," he said.

People in three of the community's homes at 5680 Santa Teresa Blvd. were told to leave by San Jose police and firefighters while PG&E crews worked to install a new transformer and repair the lines on the fallen poles, the mobile home park's manager Lauralee Gafvert said.

Occupants of the one of the homes where the transformer fell with the pole will not be allowed back until repairs are completed, according to Gafvert.

People living in the home where the pole crashed through the carport and also the undamaged home will be permitted to return in a couple of hours, she said.

Sarkissian said that power was restored this morning to all but 31 customers in the area. The remaining customers should have their power back by late this afternoon or early this evening, she said.
