San Jose Shooting Suspect Evades Police, Leaves Area; School Lockdowns Lifted

SAN JOSE (KCBS) — San Jose police have called off a two-hour plus search for a shooting suspect and have lifted area school lockdowns after officials said he managed to escape the area.

West San Jose residents were told to shelter-in-place Friday morning as police searched the neighborhood for a gunman who allegedly shot a man on the 1700 block of Southwest Expressway.

San Jose Police spokesperson Officer Albert Morales said police responded to the shooting around 5 a.m.

Arriving officers found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital and treated with non-life threatening injuries, Morales said.

Police later found a man that matched the suspect's description. When approached, the man fled into the neighborhood.

Morales described the suspect as a black male, wearing dark clothing and standing approximately 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches.

A perimeter was set up around Leigh Avenue, Stokes Street, De Rose Way and Francisco Avenue.

Del Mar High School, Valley Christian and Blackford Elementary School were locked down.

Morales said the search that involved the SWAT team, was called off shortly before noon.

"A lot of times what happens in cases like this, our officers try to get here as soon as they can. Keep in mind it was rather dark when the incident first took place. Officers try to contain a suspect in an area. Sometimes the suspect gets out of that perimeter. It appears he made it outside of our perimeter. So rather than continue with our search, we decided to go ahead and call the search," he said.
