First Winter Sunrise Gets People Up Early For A Spectacular View Of San Francisco

MARIN COUNTY (KCBS) — Winter's initial sunrise over San Francisco was postcard perfect Monday morning and many people were atop the Marin Headlands admiring the colorful yet foggy city by the Bay.

Every year, Kathy Knowles, of Mill Valley, drags her family to the steep and picturesque shoreline along with some bagels, donuts, coffee and more.

"Part of motivating the kids every year is that we always bring hot cocoa and donuts. So earlier in their life, they may not have wanted to do it. Now they love the tradition but we still do the donuts and the cocoa—and we brought friends this year."

San Francisco native and photographer Andrew Louie was ready for any change this canvas offered—and there were many.

"This is definitely pretty. We only get fog less than a dozen times a year and mostly at the end of the year, so I'm out here like almost every day to try to capture it."

Young Hayden Knowles may fight the rude wake-up call but in the end, she admits that the view is out of this world.

"When you get here, the clouds are all pink because the sun hasn't risen yet and it's just making the clouds pink and then when the sun rises it makes it all nice and gold; it's really cool," she said.

So if you're still in search of that special Christmas gift? Treat someone to a San Francisco sunrise from the Marin Headlands—but bring a jacket and certainty your camera.
