At Least 29 Demonstrators Arrested During Police Brutality Protest In Oakland On New Year's Eve
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Oakland police said at least 29 people were arrested Wednesday night following protests in downtown Oakland.
Police said about 130 people marched into the downtown area just after 9:30 p.m.
About an hour later, the crowd was in the area of the 1700 to 2000 block of Broadway and Telegraph Avenue when police said individuals in the crowd started throwing bricks and bottles at officers.
Police said there were acts of graffiti, illegal fireworks set off and trashcans thrown into the streets and on sidewalks.
Officers at the scene requested mutual aid at 10:25 p.m. The Alameda County Sheriff's Office, the Berkeley Police Department, the Emeryville Police Department, the San Leandro Police Department and the California Highway Patrol responded to assist Oakland police.
Police said the arrests were for crimes such as vandalism, failure to disperse, resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon.
Police said there were also several citations issued for vehicle code violations and Oakland Municipal Code violations.
