Coalition Collects 39,000 Signatures To Block 33% Pay Raise For Contra Costa County Supervisors

(CBS SF) -- Petitions with thousands of signatures aimed at blocking a huge raise for Contra Costa County Supervisors have been delivered.

The "No to 33%" coalition wants to put a referendum on the county ballot to stop a 33 percent pay raise. On Friday they announced a total of 39,000 signatures from registered voters -- more than the $25,500 that is legally required.

"We hereby urge the four members of the Board of Supervisors, those who in the past have demanded that we make tremendous sacrifices on behalf of the county, to reconsider this ordinance," said Public Employee's Union Local 1 General Manager Peter Nguyen.

The coalition includes several public employee unions. The Supervisors can still reverse their pay raise, but if they don't, a special election would happen three months later.
