Officer Injured After Chase Leads To Crash On San Leandro Onramp

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) - A San Leandro police officer is recovering after crashing his cruiser in Oakland early Monday morning.

The wreck happened near the northbound 880 on-ramp at Hegenberger Road just after 1 a.m. Police confirm that the officer attempted to stop a driver with no plates but he sped off.

The officer then crashed into one of the supports for the new BART airport connector.

A man eating at a nearby restaurants says he could hear the crash.

"The crash was very loud. We literally heard it like it was up close," said witness Carlos Linares. "The tires were squealing…then all you heard was the crash right after."

The San Leandro PD officer was transported with the help of Oakland Fire for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver escaped the scene and has not been located since.
