Car Thief Who Drove Stolen Car To South SF Court Appearance Faces Prison Term
REDWOOD CITY (CBS SF) -- A San Francisco man who drove a stolen car to his April court appearance in South San Francisco for a previous auto theft arrest has pleaded no contest to the charges, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Timothy Knight, 53, was arrested last Feb. 15 and charged with possession of a stolen car. He was out of custody on $50,000 bail when he stole a Honda Accord in Daly City on April 2, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.
Police spotted that car parked on the street in Daly City and investigators put a tracker on it. Knight drove the car to the South San Francisco courthouse, attended his court hearing, and got back into the car to drive away, prosecutors said.
But police were waiting for him and arrested Knight as soon as he tried to drive away. The Accord's ignition had been punched out with a screwdriver and was on the car's floor, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said Knight is a longtime car thief with seven prior felony convictions.
He pleaded no contest Monday to two counts of felony car theft in the courtroom of Judge Leland Davis on the condition that he receive no more than eight years in state prison, prosecutors said.
Knight is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 27.
