Person Struck And Killed On BART Tracks At Powell Station In San Francisco; Systemwide Delays Persist
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A male who witnesses said jumped in front of a BART train was killed on the Powell Street station tracks in San Francisco Wednesday morning, closing the station and causing major delays systemwide.
The person was reported under an East Bay-bound train at about 7:55 a.m., according to spokesperson Alicia Trost.
The Powell Street BART station has reopened as of 9:45 a.m. but major residual delays remain systemwide.
Passengers headed to San Francisco from the Dublin/Pleasanton, Richmond and Fremont lines will need to off-board their trains in Oakland and wait for a San Francisco International Airport-bound train, Trost said.
San Francisco Municipal Railway is offering free rides for BART passengers Wednesday morning in an effort to alleviate crowding on BART.
People on Twitter are reporting crowded BART platforms and trains.
There are also long lines of people that were directed off the 19th St. BART to get on buses near the Paramount Theater in Oakland.
