Fremont Police Fatally Shoot Man Accused Of Threatening 2 People With Knife

FREMONT (KPIX 5) – Police in Fremont fatally shot a man who is suspected of threatening two people while brandishing a knife near a city park Friday afternoon.

According to authorities, three police officers who responded to the call found the armed suspect on Lake Arrowhead Avenue near Sylvester Harvey Park around 2:15 p.m.

Witnesses told police that the man was threatening two people in the neighborhood.

"They saw a male walking on the street. He had a large knife in his hand and he was pointing at some younger kids," said Geneva Bosques of the Fremont Police Department.

Police said Friday night the kids may actually have been young adults.

Joann Allison, who lives nearby, said she saw the suspect approach two young contractors working on a home.

"And so, one of the workers was backing away from the man, supposedly brandishing a weapon. I myself didn't see the weapon, but I heard him say 'Call the police, he's got a knife,'" Allison recalled.

When police found the man at the edge of the park, one of the officers fired a stun gun at him, while a second officer fired their service weapon, killing the man.

Police said none of the officers or neighbors was injured.

"It's a very busy park, there's also a bus stop here, there's children in the area," Bosques said.

It is unclear what prompted the officer to open fire. Police said the man's identity is not yet known, but said it appeared to be a man in his 40s.

"I looked at his face and he looked angry, and his eyes were glassy, like he wanted to do something," Allison said.

Pavandeep Atwal, who also lives in the neighborhood, said, "This kind of stuff doesn't happen around here, nothing like this."

Authorities were at the scene investigating for several hours Friday night. It is not clear whether the suspect knew the two men.
