Coroner IDs Knife-Wielding Man Shot Dead By Fremont Police On Friday

FREMONT (CBS SF) -- The Alameda County Coroner has released the identity of a man who was fatally shot by police Friday afternoon after reportedly brandishing a knife at juveniles in the vicinity of a local park.

Zaki Shinwary, a Hayward resident, was 48.

Officers were dispatched to Lake Arrowhead Avenue near Sylvester Harvey Park at roughly 2:15 p.m. They located Shinwary, who was reportedly armed.

One officer fired a Taser stun gun and a second officer fired his service weapon at Shinwary. He succumbed to his wounds on the scene.

The incident is being investigated in coordination with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

RECENT CRIME NEWS:

Friday afternoon police were going door to door, checking with neighbors to see if anyone had encountered Shinwary earlier in the day.

"We believe he was in the neighborhood and other individuals may have encountered him, not necessarily with the knife," said police spokeswoman Officer Geneva Bosques.

Anyone with information on the shooting or suspect is asked to call police at (510) 790-6900, Bosques said.
