With Some Ski Resorts Closing, Is It Time To Panic About Our Water?

KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales answers the questions you never get to ask on-air.

Q: With all the crazy wet weather we had in December transitioning into a very dry weather pattern this month, is it too early to panic about water levels based on what you may have seen in the projection models for this season? - Dan Winer

A: Hi Dan! In my opinion, we should always be concerned about water levels here in the Bay Area. The one thing I try to remind people, we have more people living in the State Of California than ever before, and we are all tapping into the same resource...water!

As of today, two ski resorts have shut down for the Winter Season due to the lack of snowfall. Badger Pass, a small ski area located within Yosemite National Park and Dodge Ridge (east of Sonora) announced, due to unseasonably warm temperatures, they will be on a brief hold until the next winter storm delivers enough snow to resume operations.

The Bay Area Precipitation Climatology reports we are currently 102-148 Percent of Normal (PON) thanks to a hefty month of December. But so far in January we have NOT seen any measurable rainfall and the stats are quickly dwindling. There is a chance of subtropical moisture from the south moving into the Bay Area beginning late Monday night through Wednesday, but this is only a minimal rainmaker.

I believe it is necessary for all of us to be diligent on water conservation.

I would love to hear from you! Please send weather questions, observations and photos to me, Gonzales@kpix.cbs.com and I look forward to hearing from you!
