CHP Step Up Enforcement Of Speed Limits On Golden Gate Bridge As Drivers Increasingly Step On Their Gas Pedals
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — The California Highway Patrol is stepping up enforcement on the Golden Gate Bridge as drivers have been travelling at ever increasing—and dangerous—speeds since the new median barrier was installed.

When the barrier was installed—with the furthest left lane now six inches narrower than the other lanes—the hope was that drivers would actually slow down but CHP Officer Patrick Roth told KCBS, it's having just the opposite effect.
"Since the Golden Gate Bridge has put in the median barrier, we have found that speeds have seemed to increase on the bridge," Roth said. "I think people have a more sense of security now that the barriers in place and I think that makes their speeds increase as they cross the bridge."
After receiving 9-1-1 calls from drivers, the CHP stepped up enforcement on Wednesday.
Fourteen citations were in one hour. One driver was traveling at 71 miles per hour.
"Just because there is a movable median barrier there, doesn't mean that your increased speed is safe. There are no shoulders in the area so a stalled vehicle will now be in the lane," Roth said.
