Exclusive SF-Based Dating App 'The League' Gets $2.1M Boost From Investors

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - There seems to be a trend afoot -- apps and social media websites that purport to be more intelligent alternatives to already existing apps and social media websites. Ello has taken on Facebook. Now a new app called 'The League,' is taking on Tinder and all the popular dating sites. Its motto: Date intelligently.

"You're smart, busy and ambitious," says the headline on the apps' website. "You don't need a dating app to get a date, you're popular as it is. But you should join The League."

Basically, The League purports to be the dating app for people who don't need a dating app.

Unashamedly exclusive, The League just got a $2.1 million boost from a group of angel investors and venture capitalists while still in its pre-launch beta phase.

The app launched in private beta last December, in San Francisco. Once it rolls out in 2016, founder Amanda Bradford hopes to draw members seeking a high-quality dating experience. Already, The League boasts some 4,500 users, and more than 20,000 more on its waiting list for public beta.

"Our platform has made more than 22,000 matches, but more importantly, we feel confident we're on track to building a better environment for ambitious, driven singles to meet," said Bradford, a Stanford MBA graduate, with an engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon. "Once matched, our League users average a 70% reply rate and a 20% offline meetup rate, metrics we feel are a testament to the higher quality experience we offer our members."

The League promises to hide profiles so no one knows "you're on the prowl." Privacy seems to be The League's driving credo in "the post-Tinder era."

Until next year's roll out, those who are not yet League-worthy can download the app on iTunes.
