Community Rallies Around Widow Of Man Killed Trying To Protect Mother From Thief

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- A murder victim's family is desperate to find the killers who left a wife without her husband and two children without their father.

Tears stream down the face of Feng Fang. The pain is still fresh after her husband's death last Tuesday.

Da Cong Wu was trying to protect his mother from a robber in San Francisco's Sunnydale section. He hurried his mother into the car and tried to drive away, but the robber shot him seven times.

His aunt says they don't quite know how to break the news to the children, ages 2 and 4, that their father is not coming home.

On Monday afternoon, police held a community meeting at the Sunnydale Senior Center. Cpt. Joseph McFadden told a standing room only crowd the shooting of Da Cong Wu was random.

"This was a robbery that we believe went awry," McFadden said. "It was senseless and very heinous for the fact that a 33-year-old victim died for no reason. Because we don't believe anything was taken from this robbery attempt."

Da Cong Wu came to this country 10 years ago, according to a family friend. Worked hard, got his citizenship, and brought his family over. It's the American story.

The Chinese six -- a group of community and family organizations -- is now raising money on the family's behalf.

Moved to tears by the story, community member Sarah Bi started a GoFundMe account online to pay for funeral costs and rent.

"It grabbed me," Bi said. "And I think there's a lot of people out there that care."
