Former Stanford Freshman Swimmer Charged With Raping Unconscious Woman On Campus
PALO ALTO (CBS SF) -- A former Stanford University student has been charged with raping an intoxicated, unconscious woman on the campus.
Brock Allen Turner was charged Tuesday with five felony counts on suspicion of attempted rape and penetration with a foreign object.
Prosecutors say the attack happened Jan. 18 and that two men riding bikes on campus saw an unconscious woman on the ground with a man on top of her.
Turner ran away, but they chased him down and held him until police arrived. His attorney, Mike Armstrong of Palo Alto, declined to comment.
A university spokesperson said the alleged victim was not a Stanford student.
Stanford spokeswoman Lisa Lapin said the 19-year-old from Dayton, Ohio voluntarily withdrew from the university on Tuesday.
The Standford Daily reports Turner last swam for the university in a Jan. 10 meet against Pacific, finishing third in the 1,000-yard freestyle and second in the 200-yard backstroke. Turner had apparently long dreamed of swimming for the Cardinal. The state championship swimmer told his hometown CBS station about his plan to compete in college and possibly even the Olympics.
Turner has been released on $150,000 bail and could face up to 10 years in prison.
