Google's 1 Gigabit Per Second Fiber Internet Expands To 4 More Cities, Not Yet In Bay Area
MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS SF) – Google is reportedly planning to expand its ultra high-speed fiber optic internet service to four more cities, but no Bay Area or California cities have yet been announced.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the cities selected are Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, NC and Nashville. The newspaper reported that the service would officially be unveiled later this week.
Sources told CBS affiliate WRAL in Raleigh-Durham that construction could begin in their community as early as April.
San Jose city spokesperson David Vossbrink told the Journal that this week's announcement "should not be considered the end of the road for the other areas." Google reportedly considered building fiber opting internet service in San Jose and several other cities last year.
The service, which offers internet speeds at one gigabit per second, is currently being offered in Kansas City, Austin, Texas and Provo, Utah.
