Weekend Magazine: Love At The Marina Safeway, Grateful Dead History, And SF Ballet's Yuan Yuan Tan

You can listen to the broadcast of Weekend Magazine with KCBS Public Affairs Director Liz Saint John every Sunday morning from 3:00am-4:00am and again from 5:00am-6:00am on KCBS All News 740 AM and 106.9 FM.

Liz Saint John interviews three guests every Sunday morning covering a variety of issues and topics. She talks with representatives from Bay Area non-profit organizations, documentary filmmakers, authors, and professors.

Armistead Maupin started writing about singles finding love at the Marina Safeway in a column for the Pacific Sun in 1974. The Chronicle picked up the series in 1976 and then the stories expanded out into books. The Tales of the City series concludes with The Days of Anna Madrigal, the ninth, and last book in the series.  Maupin talks about his start as a journalist (and the campus conservative!) at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, his move to San Francisco, and his trips in recent years to Burning Man.         Listen to the podcast here.

Peter Richardson teaches Humanities and American Studies at San Francisco State University. His new book is No Simple Highway: A Cultural History of the Grateful Dead. He talks about the history of The Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia's teen years when he enrolled in a summer program at the California School of Fine Arts, the start of the Dead's relationship with Bill Graham, and the upcoming 50th anniversary shows planned for this July in Chicago with the four surviving original members.                                 Listen to the podcast here.

Yuan Yuan Tan is the Richard C. Barker Principal Dancer with San Francisco Ballet. She talks about her early training in Shanghai, how she was recruited to come to San Francisco, and the ballets in the 2015 season.  Listen to the podcast here.
