Golden State Warriors Guard Klay Thompson Makes 1st All-Star Team

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson was named Thursday to his first National Basketball Association All-Star team.

He joins Western Conference starter and Warriors backcourt mate Stephen Curry, the league's leading vote-getter. This marks the time since 1993 that the Warriors have had two All-Star selections in the same year. That year, Tim Hardaway and Chris Mullin were both chosen to the Western Conference squad.

Thompson is having a career year in 2014-15, averaging 23.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.29 steals and 0.93 blocks per game. He is currently the seventh leading scorer in the NBA. Thompson has been named Western Conference Player of the Week three times so far this season.

By far his most memorable performance came in a January 23 game against Sacramento, when he went for a career-high 52 points, including 37 points in the third quarter. He made 13-of-13 shots from the field in that frame, including all nine of his three-point attempts. He eclipsed the previous NBA record for points in a quarter of 33, held by George Gervin and Carmelo Anthony.

Thompson has been a key part of helping to lead the Warriors to the best start in franchise history, with an NBA-best record of 36-7.

The All-Star Game will be held in New York City on Sunday, February 15.
