Strong Bay Area Storm To End Mid-Winter Break From Rain; 43 Consecutive Dry Days

KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales answers the questions you never get to ask on-air.

Q: Roberta, when is the last time its rained here in the Bay Area? - Matthew Mengal; Danville

A: As of today, 43 days ago

We are officially in a mid-winter break from rain. The typical mid-winter dry spell is termed:  "Consecutive dry days only interrupted by no greater than two non-consecutive days with less than or equal to 0.08 of measurable rainfall." Bottom line, the dry weather began on December 22, 2014 with the last measurable rain of 0.07 on Christmas eve. Including today, we have not received any measurable precipitation for 43 days. The longest dry stretch is 60 days in 1876-1877.

But all this will change!

As of right now, rain should begin in the North Bay overnight Wednesday and pretty much stall in the far North Bay on Thursday, Perhaps a splash of showers as far south as San Francisco Thursday afternoon., but mainly, this is a North Bay event on Thursday.

By Friday morning, the heavy North Bay showers will sag south and east. But, look for the possibility of an Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory for the North Bay with flooding in the low lying prone areas around Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park and Mill Valley. Wind Advisories could be posted as well.

Everybody gets wet on Friday with windy conditions. If the system stays on track, the San Francisco Bay Area will see the brunt of the rain by Friday afternoon, moving south to San Jose and Santa Cruz by the evening commute.

Rain will linger into Saturday will a strong second wave of showers Saturday evening into Sunday morning before tapering off late Sunday afternoon. There could be downed trees and power lines. Flowing debris possible on Highways 1 and 17.

I will keep you posted on the timing of the rain and the wind as the week progresses. If you have a question, observation or picture to share with me, please email me at: Gonzales@kpix.cbs.com
