Van Driver Runs Over Pigeons Feeding In Vallejo Parking Lot; 27 Birds Killed

VALLEJO (CBS SF) -- Police in Vallejo are looking for the driver of a van who intentionally ran down a group of pigeons gathered at a feeding spot in a parking lot Sunday, killing at 27 of them.

One witness said he came upon the scene at the Vallejo Marina shortly after it happened and said he saw dozens of dead and injured birds.

The witness said a woman who regularly feeds the birds told him the driver came just as she had begun feeding them.

"When they were piled up, they came and did the donuts, killed as many as they can and they just took off," said Masood Vydyarakath.

Police told the Vallejo Times-Herald a van that had been parked in the lot of the public boat launch drove through the flock but due to the suddenness of the attack they had no description of the suspect other than the van.

When a KPIX 5 photographer arrived at the scene, city workers and animal rescue staffers had removed the dead and injured pigeons.

Solano County Sheriff's Animal Control said it assisted Vallejo police in removing the dead and injured pigeons.

Workers found 25 pigeons were dead; two others transported to Animal Control ended up dying as well.
