SJ Father Clings To Life After DUI Driver Smashes Into Fruit Stand, Hitting Couple

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) -- A drunk driver left a trail of destruction in the South Bay. Police say the driver careened out of control and slammed into a husband and wife at a fruit stand.

It happened near the intersection of White Road and Mount Vista Drive, in San Jose.

Police said the driver was all over the place. The fruit stand and the couple working there got the worst of his drunken rampage. The stand was completely destroyed.

It all began when the driver pulled out of a parking lot and hit a silver car on White Road. The car traveled a few hundred yards more, swerved into the fruit stand on the sidewalk, hit a pole in front of a nearby house, hit a parked car and eventually came to a stop on Mount Vista Drive.

The two who were hit at the fruit stand were rushed to the hospital. The man, who neighbors said is named Francisco, has life threatening injuries.

Neighbors are praying for him and hope he makes it out of the hospital alive.

They said this married couple has kids and have been running the fruit and vegetable stand for years.

Neighbor Ann Elizaga and her mom are frequent customers.

"It's just sad to know that one of them is fighting for their life right now," said Ann Elizaga. "Very nice people, I mean they just help everybody... sometimes when kids don't have money, they just give."

Police have arrested the man behind the wheel for driving under the influence. He was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.
