Spelling Goof By Button Supplier To Berkeley Public Library Helps Counterpart In Michigan

BERKELEY (CBS/AP) -- A spelling mistake by a company supplying buttons to the public library in Berkeley, California, is helping its Michigan almost-namesake city promote its own book services.

The Berkley Public Library in suburban Detroit has received a shipment of white-on-red buttons from its California counterpart. The buttons say, "I have a library Card. Berkley Public Library."

Unlike Berkeley, the East Bay hub of higher education and progressive politics, Michigan's city lacks the second E.

Joi Shioshita is a supervising librarian at California library's children's room. She tells theDetroit Free Press that it placed a large button order about 10 years ago.

Officials didn't immediately notice the spelling error.

Shioshita says her library sent most of the buttons to the Michigan library then. She says more turned up recently and also were sent to Berkley, Michigan.
