Anti-LGBT Christian Group Lists 6 Bay Area Groups On 'Bigotry Map'

(CBS SF) -- The anti-LGBT fundamental Christian group American Family Association (AFA) is taking a stab at its nemeses by placing them on a new interactive "Bigotry Map."

On Monday, AFA identified over 200 organizations that "openly display bigotry toward the Christian faith." The map includes groups that advocate for the legalization of same-sex marriage, atheists and humanists who believe science trumps faith when it comes to decision-making.

The group is following in the footsteps of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which since 2013, has listed active U.S. hate groups on its website. American Family Association is one of 939 hate groups identified as having a belief and practice that "attack or malign an entire class of people," particularly the gay community.

It's no surprise then that AFA dubbed the Southern Poverty Law Center and Human Rights Campaign among the four national "bigotry groups."

The Human Rights Campaign responded in a blog post Tuesday: "Sadly, however, the AFA, 'one of the largest and most effective pro-family organizations in the country,' forgot to include one of the largest bigoted organizations in America on the map: themselves."

AFA listed six Bay Area organizations on the map, including the Human Rights Campaign Action Center in San Francisco's Castro District, the Secular Student Alliance at UC Santa Cruz and the East Bay Atheists in Berkeley.

"A common practice of these groups is threatening our nation's schools, cities and states," AFA wrote. "By threat of lawsuit, they demand that prayer be removed from schools and city council meetings, Ten Commandments monuments stricken from courthouses and memorial crosses purged from cemeteries and parks."
