Double Shooting Leaves 2 Men Dead In Livermore; Police Arrest Suspect

LIVERMORE (CBS SF) -- The man suspected of killing two people in a quiet Livermore neighborhood is now behind bars.

Livermore police had James Wears under surveillance for some time, and when officers went to nab him, it was a painful arrest.

"We conducted a traffic stop, Wears resisted arrest, the K9 was deployed," said Traci Rebiejo with the Livermore Police. "He was bitten and taken into custody."

Police say it began at 4:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon when the neighbors called 911 about a group of three men arguing in the area of Altamont Creek and Winding Stream drives.

Officers arrived and found one man shot dead, the other critically wounded, who later died at the hospital.

Wears, 28, took off in a car. Police found what they think was the murder weapon at a nearby church. Investigators say it was some kind of illegal deal.

"All three men knew each other, and we believe they met up to exchange contraband," Rebiejo said.

Police wouldn't say what the illegal item was. But a friend, who didn't want to appear on camera, said it was bungled deal over guns.

"And in the middle of that, either an argument or something took place and there was a fumbling, exchange of whatever they had," he said. "Someone fired and the other person I was told, after the person fired killed the one guy's friend, my friend was killed."

Police say it's an isolated incident, but neighbors say there's been an increase of suspicious activity at the Altamont Creek Park.

The neighbor didn't want to show her face on camera, but wants more police patrols.

"We're scared," she said. "We don't know what type of activity is going on. We don't know what really went down and we don't really want to be involved."

The deaths are the first homicides in Livermore this year.

Rebiejo said the last homicide in Livermore was in December 2012 when Robert Ogden was shot to death.
