California May Impose Stricter Water Rules, $500 Fines For Watering Plants More Than 2 Days A Week

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – After another historically dry winter, California is set to really clamp down on water wasters. For those who don't go along, the state could put a big drain on your wallet.

Starting next month, the state water board could start imposing some strict new rules to clamp down on water waste.

Among them: outdoor watering would be limited to no more than two days per week.

Another new rule would require hotel and motel operators to offer their customers the option of not having their towels and linens washed daily. And restaurants and bars would be prohibited from serving water except when a customer requests it.

Some of the new requirements are already being done voluntarily, but the new rules would make them mandatory, with a threat of a $500 fine.

The water board is expected to consider the proposals next week. If approved, they would go into effect in April.
