Suspected Stalker Found With Apparent Grenade In Richmond Motel Room

RICHMOND (CBS/AP) — Police in the East Bay say a man suspected of stalking his ex-girlfriend was arrested at a motel that had to be evacuated after officers found an apparent grenade in his room.

The San Jose Mercury News reports officers arrested Oscar Barrera Wednesday at a motel in Richmond.

Richmond police spokeswoman Sgt. Nicole Abetkov says police evacuated the motel for more than an hour after finding the device and called in the Walnut Creek Police Department Bomb Squad.

Walnut Creek police Lt. Steve Gorski says the grenade was detonated but that officials are still trying to determine if the grenade was genuine. He says not all grenades that explode are authentic.

Abetkov says Barrera has been suspected of stalking his ex-girlfriend since December.
