Firefighter Injured, Dog Killed In Pinole House Fire

PINOLE (CBS SF) -- A residential structure fire in Pinole injured a firefighter, killed a dog and displaced two residents Sunday night, according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District fire officials.

The incident was reported at 10:53 p.m. Sunday in the 3600 block of Remuda Way. Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames in the front and side of the house and cut holes in the roof to ventilate the heat and smoke, fire officials said.

Initial reports indicated that a person may have been trapped inside, but fire crews determined that all of the residents had exited the home safely. Their dog, however, did not survive.

The American Red Cross responded to assist two adult residents displaced by the fire, according to fire officials.

One firefighter suffered a sprained ankle during the response to the blaze, but did not require medical treatment or time off because of the injury, according to Acting Battalion Chief Chris Bloch.

"He just kind of walked it off and kept going," Bloch said.
