Inmate Escapes Custody Of San Francisco Sheriff's Deputies, Last Seen In SoMa Wearing Only His Underwear

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Authorities are searching San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood late Monday night for an inmate who escaped while taking out the trash, possibly wearing only his boxer shorts.

According to authorities, 26-year-old Alex Santiago-Gonzales was being escorted by a deputy to the Hall of Justice basement to take out the garbage when he ran away shortly before 9:00 p.m. The man reportedly took off his orange prison jumpsuit and took off running.

Police described Santiago-Gonzales as 5'6" tall, weighing about 180 pounds and wearing blue boxer shorts.

Monday night, a deputy sheriff escorted the inmate to the Hall Of Justice basement to take out the jail trash. While in transit to the basement garbage dumpster, the inmate fled on Harriet Alley towards Harrison Street. The deputy Sheriff gave chase, provided a description and direction of travel, but was unable to catch the inmate.

Santiago-Gonzales was booked into the county jail last July on a federal hold for drugs and weapons violations.

This is the second such breakaway in San Francisco in eight months. Last June, 40-year-old Timony Midgett also ran away from deputies, also while taking out the trash at the Hall of Justice.

In Santa Clara County, authorities are still looking for 40-year-old Johnell Carter, who escaped March 6 from a medical center after he fought with a deputy there.
