San Jose State University Cheerleading Squad Wins National Championship

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- The San Jose State University cheerleading squad has won the United Spirit Association's national collegiate championship for the second year in a row, the university announced Tuesday.

SJSU beat 10 other schools in the "small coed" four-year college category, meaning that the teams used fewer than four male cheerleaders in their two-and-a-half minute routines.

The Spartans' performances were also judged best overall at the two-day competition. Head coach Kelvin Lam said he thought this year's routine was more difficult than the one that won in 2014, according to the university.

Teams were judged on choreography, execution, showmanship and difficulty, SJSU officials said.

The United Spirit Association's 21st annual national collegiate championships took place Sunday and Monday at the Anaheim Convention Center in Southern California.
