Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Hits Central California Near Coalinga

COALINGA, Calif. (CBS SF)  — The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 4.2 earthquake has struck in Central California.

The quake hit at 6:30 a.m. PST Friday about 6 miles north of Coalinga at a depth of 6.6 miles. Deeper quakes are less noticeable while a shallow quake--in the 0 to 40 mile depth range--can feel much stronger than their actual reported magnitude. Quakes just below the earth's surface, in the 0 to 10 miles range, can cause even more damage at lower magnitudes.

Christine Mercer, a dispatcher with the Coalinga Police Department, says the quake wasn't too strong and lasted four or five seconds.

She said: "You could kind of hear the rumble and then there was a jerk and that was it."

Mercer says police received numerous calls, but none reported any damage or injuries.
