Corte Madera Man Allegedly Tailed Driver Who Cut Him Off, Assaulted Him With Hammer

SEBASTOPOL (CBS SF) — A 24-year-old man who allegedly assaulted another man with a hammer at a busy Sebastopol intersection on Thursday has been arrested, police said Friday.

Sean Exter, of Corte Madera, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

On Thursday, Exter was in a sedan and apparently got angry when a box truck cut in front of him on Bodega Highway just west of the Sebastopol city limit, Sgt. Greg DeVore said.

The sedan followed the truck into Sebastopol and pulled up next to the driver’s side of the truck at a red light at Bodega Highway and Pleasant Hill Road, DeVore said.

Exter got out of the sedan and allegedly yanked at the driver’s door of the truck. The truck driver opened his door to push the sedan driver away and he was hit at least once on the back of the head with a carpenter’s framing hammer, DeVore said.

The sedan was last seen heading south on Pleasant Hill Road, according to DeVore.

The victim suffered a minor injury that caused bleeding and was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

The truck driver, a plumber, had just dropped off his daughter at school and was heading to work when the incident happened around 8 a.m., DeVore said.

Police developed leads that indicated the suspect car was in Corte Madera in Marin County, Sebastopol acting Sgt. David Harston said.

Sebastopol asked Central Marin Police Authority officers to go to the address registered with the suspect car, Harston said.

The officers located a man later identified as Exter and found the sedan involved in the alleged incident at the address, according to Harson.

Exter was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail.

Anyone who witnessed the alleged assault is asked to call Sebastopol police Officer Cameron Fenske at (707) 829-4400.
