High-Tech Device Keeps Sharks Away From Surfers, Divers, Swimmers

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- An unexpected shark encounter can be terrifying, even deadly for surfers, divers and swimmers.

Now there's a high-tech shark-repellent to keep sharks away.

It's called Shark Shield.

The Aussie company that created it showed it off in Southern California, this weekend.

Basically, Shark Shield creates a 3-D electronic field or protection around the swimmer.

The company says it works a bit like a taser, but does not harm the sharks.

"We have 2 electrodes, and when those are submerged in sea water it creates a 3-dimensional electric field," explains general manager, Amanda Wilson. "That affects the shark's electrical receptors in their snout. We overpower them and keep them 15-20 feet away from the wearer."

The Shark Shield can be strapped to a swimmer's ankle or a surfboard.

It costs about $700.
