Beyond 140 Characters: Twitter Lets Users Say More When Quoting Others' Tweets

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – While Twitter has limited users to messages of 140 characters or less since its inception, the social networking giant is allowing users to say a little more when they retweet others' messages.

Twitter revamped its "quote tweet" feature Monday, according to CNET. The feature embeds the original tweet, preserving its original context, and allows users to add up to 116 characters of commentary.

Changes to quote tweet are the latest in a series of changes to Twitter's interface, all in a push to increase engagement among users. Earlier this year, Twitter unveiled a feature called "Recap," which showed possibly relevant tweets that users missed while they were away.

The feature is available for Twitter users who view the service on the web and iOS devices. Android functionality is expected soon.
