"The suspect was armed with a knife and the knife was recovered at the scene," said Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Deputy Chief David Pitts. Authorities said officers asked the suspect to drop his weapon and when he refused, an officer opened fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was transferred to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police have not released the suspect's name.

Authorities said the investigation continues into the shooting and there are no traffic closures at this time. The only area impacted is the strip mall parking lot at Tasman and Lawrence Expressway.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave.
