Don't Tell The Kids... Kraft Replacing Artificial Ingredients In Mac & Cheese With Healthy Stuff

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Shhh! Your kid's favorite orange-y, gooey, cheesy dinner dish is about to get healthy. Well, maybe not exactly healthy, but certainly better for them.

Kraft announced it is taking the artificial colors and preservatives out of its Original Macaroni & Cheese.

Starting in 2016, the company will replace the synthetic colors responsible for that orange-y, gooey sauce with natural stuff, like paprika, annatto and turmeric -- none of which sound very kid-pleasing, but are bound to satisfy parents who want something less artificial.

According to the company's VP of Marketing Triona Schmelter, kids won't taste the difference.

"We've been working tirelessly to find the right recipe that our fans will love."

Kraft has already reduced sodium and saturated fats, and removed the synthetic colors from its Mac & Cheese Boxed Shapes. They've even added choices like Deluxe, Organic and Whole Grain to its macaroni options.

"We've met with families in their homes and watched them prepare Kraft Mac & Cheese in their kitchens. They told us they want to feel good about the foods they eat and serve their families, including everything from improved nutrition to simpler ingredients," Triona Schmelter.

Expect the new, healthier Mac & Cheese to be on shelves, and ultimately, on your kid's plate by January 2016. You decide whether or not to tell them.
