Deputies Shoot Wrong-Way Driver Who Struck 3 Deputies In Sonoma County

SONOMA COUNTY (CBS SF) -- Sonoma County Sheriff's deputies shot a driver that drove a car into three deputies Wednesday night in Sonoma County.

A high-speed chase started after deputies got a call of a wrong-way driver in the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 101 near Windsor.

Shortly before midnight, a deputy spotted the vehicle driving recklessly and attempted to stop it on Old Redwood Highway near Starr Road in Windsor, but the vehicle sped away on U.S. Highway 101, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies pursued the vehicle as it exited the highway and stopped in the parking lot in Sebastopol.

Deputies gave verbal commands to driver to surrender, but the driver accelerated the vehicle in reverse, striking three deputies and a patrol vehicle, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputies responded by firing several shots into the vehicle, which struck the suspect an undetermined number of times.

The suspect was transported to the hospital. There was no information immediately available as to the suspect's condition.

One deputy was treated and released from the hospital, and two other deputies suffered minor injuries in the incident, deputies said.

The Santa Rosa Police Department's Violent Crimes Investigations Unit is conducting an investigation into the incident.
