Why Napa Is The Best Place To Get Your Exercise This Weekend

KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales answers the questions you never get to ask on-air.

Q: Roberta, heard you on KCBS Radio this morning and you were talking about cycling. Where are you riding this weekend?

A: 100 miles through Napa Valley!

May 1 kicks off the festival season here In the Bay Area and I have noticed there is a variety of activities taking place this weekend! One event I am participating in is the Annual Tour de Cure in Napa Valley. It is a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery. Both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles in the cause of type 2 diabetes. Both my mother and father were diagnosed as Diabetics, so this weekend's Tour de Cure is very special and close to my heart.

Symptoms of Diabetes

Diabetes often goes undiagnosed because many of its symptoms may seem harmless. Recent studies indicate that the early detection of diabetes symptoms and treatment can decrease the chance of developing the complications of diabetes. Some diabetes symptoms include: frequent urination, excessive thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, irritability and blurry vision. If you have one or more of these diabetes symptoms, see your doctor right away.

Diabetes Complications are Serious

•Increased risk of heart disease and stroke

•Leading cause of kidney failure

•Nervous system disease and non-traumatic lower-limb amputations

On Sunday, my friend Donna McGee and I will leave Pleasanton at 4:45am and drive to Yountville, where we will jump in the saddle and ride our bikes 100 miles throughout the vineyards of Napa Valley to raise awareness and money for Diabetes Research. If you see the many riders on the road, please give us a "brake" as we pedal through your town.

Have a great weekend!
