3.3 Earthquake Rattles Redding; Fifth 3+ Magnitude Quake To Shake Calif. In 12 Hours

REDDING, Calif. (CBS SF) -- From north to south, it's been a shaky Wednesday for California residents thanks to a swarm of small earthquakes.

The latest quake, a shallow magnitude 3.3, struck Redding at 11:30 a.m.

Before 8 a.m., three earthquakes -- two with a 3-plus magnitude -- struck the Bay Area city of Concord in a 30 minute span.

Earlier, two small earthquakes rattled the Hemet area of Southern California. Hundreds people reported feeling the largest of the two, a 3.9-magnitude temblor, that struck at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday

The probability California will experience a magnitude 8 or larger earthquake in the next couple of decades has increased, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A study by the Third Uniform California Rupture Forecast, or UCERF3, sheds new light on where earthquakes will likely hit in California over the next couple of decades and how big they're expected to be.

"The new likelihoods are due to the inclusion of possible multi-fault ruptures, where earthquakes are no longer confined to separate, individual faults, but can occasionally rupture multiple faults simultaneously," said lead author and USGS scientist Ned Field. "This is a significant advancement in terms of representing a broader range of earthquakes throughout California's complex fault system."
