TOMORROWLAND (PG) 130 min

For once the future is not the post-apocalyptic nightmare of today's science fiction. In Tomorrowland, we start with an engaging story of an ambitious boy inventor at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. We move from there to Texas where a spunky, smart 17-year-old girl has a gift for science. Eventually when we get to Tomorrowland, it is stunning and actually fun as people levitate and buildings float and curl in the air. Director Brad Bird has given us reasons to see this as it belongs in Imax. Britt Robertson is positive and optimistic as Casey. George Clooney— cynical and bitter— makes for a good contrast. Together they fight Tomorrowland's Governor, Hugh Laurie. Everything is always better with Hugh Laurie in it. The bad news is, it's about a half hour too long. Kids and teens will like it too and I'm glad for the optimism and activism it shows them.

Blythe Danner stars as a lovely, gentle widow whose life is simple as possible, loving her dogs and being with friends. Because she is so attractive and calm — almost any man's dream— she has an encounter with gorgeous, sexy Sam Elliot. Their affair stirs the film up and makes it interesting. Her friend, including Rhea Perlman, are not given enough to do. It would have been a good idea to put their stories in as well, but I can see why some would enjoy this. It's a sweet, kind story with a good actress as the lead. Too bad I don't know anyone this calm and boring.
