Harvard Study: Reusable Grocery Bags May Make You More Likely To Buy Organic, Indulge In Junk Food

(CBS SF) – They're good for the environment, but could your reusable shopping bag lead to weight gain? New research from Harvard may link links reusable bags to junk food.

Uma Karmarkar of the Harvard Business School studied the habits of shoppers when they shopped with their own bags, and compared them to when they didn't. "On the trips where people brought their bags, they seemed more likely to buy organic," she said.

But you might be surprised by what else they put in that reusable bag. "They were also more likely to put an indulgence in their basket, and so we defined indulgences as cookies, ice cream and potato chips," Karmarkar said.
