Gumball 3000 Rally Roars Into San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- High-priced supercars and celebrities roared into San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza Wednesday night in part of a rally race spanning the globe.

The racers competing in the weeklong Gumball3000 race from Stockholm to Las Vegas flew into Reno Wednesday afternoon, and set off for downtown San Francisco.

Racers start out in Stockholm, then race to various check points in Europe. From Amsterdam, the cars were flown to Reno, where the racers set out for the first check point in San Francisco.

The race takes place on public roads, and many drivers are stopped for speeding.

Tony Hawk was in one of the first teams to arrive Wednesday night. Hawk's team piloted a Mini Cooper, while most racers stuck with exotic supercars like Ferraris, Paganis, and DeadMau5's McLaren P1.

El Viejo Javi tweeted this picture of deadmau5's McLaren on the start line in Reno.

Knight Rider star David Hasselhoff teamed up with his old friend 'KITT' to take part in the rally for his eighth year in a row.

The 'Hoff's personal Pontiac Trans Am 'KITT' will be auctioned off for charity at the end of the rally in Las Vegas on Saturday. The proceeds will benefit underprivileged youth through education and environmental projects.

An all electric Renovo Motors Coupe developed in Silicon Valley that is capable of 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds was also on display at the event.
