Hostages Released, Suspect In Custody After Antioch Gas Station Standoff With Carjacking Suspect

ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- A man who led police on a chase through three East Bay cities released a pair of hostages and was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol after a standoff at an Antioch gas station Wednesday afternoon.

Officers spent hours outside the Arco gas station on Contra Loma Blvd with guns drawn as the suspect held the gas station owner and manager, according to CHP.

At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Antioch Police Chief Allan Cantando said the suspect carjacked at least two cars before crashing near the Arco gas station. The suspect, described as a male with long hair, attempted a third carjacking but failed. A police officer fired at the suspect when he thought he saw a gun in his hand.

The suspect then entered the gas station and reportedly took the two hostages with him. No injuries were immediately reported.

An eyewitness told KPIX he saw CHP and the suspect exchanging gun fire.

"We believe the male pointed a weapon at the CHP officer and the CHP officer fired one shot back.  It is unknown if the male was hit," said Antioch Police Chief Allan Cantado. "It's unknown if he actually hit the individual."

Several other witnesses tweeted from the scene.

CHP tweeted that all L Street on and off ramps were shut down for Highway 4 due during the incident. It was unclear how long it would take for traffic in the area to return to normal.
