SJ Police Pursue, Arrest Couple Who Tried To Hit Officer, Ram Patrol Car During Traffic Stop

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Officers conducting a yard-to-yard search located the two suspects around 9:45 p.m. in the backyard of a home on McLaughlin Avenue, police said.

Police said the suspects' identities would not be released Sunday night.

Police had asked residents to stay inside while they searched for the couple. Authorities cordoned off three to four blocks in the area of Tully Road, McLaughlin Avenue and Sherlock Drive.

Officers first began searching for the two suspects after members in the department's gang suppression unit attempted to stop the couple's vehicle in the area of Story Road and McLaughlin Avenue around 6:30 p.m.

The driver drove at an officer who was on foot in what police described as an attempt to hit the officer.

The officer moved out of the way and tried to follow the car but lost sight of the vehicle in the area of McLaughlin Avenue and Story Road, police said.

Officers on patrol spotted the car in the area of Tully Road and McLaughlin Avenue, police said.

The suspect vehicle allegedly struck an occupied police cruiser and continued driving before both suspects bailed out of the car and fled on foot into the neighborhood in the area of Tully Road and Sherlock Drive.

Police said no injuries were reported.

By about 10 p.m. roads were reopened and residents were allowed to leave their homes.
