Jan Wahl Movie Review: 'Entourage' And 'Spy'

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — KCBS Entertainment Editor Jan Wahl reviews "Entourage", a movie based on the popular TV series, and the James Bond parody "Spy" starring Melissa McCarthy.
ENTOURAGE (R) 104 min
I used to watch Entourage the TV series. It always reminds me of how glad I am to have traded Los Angeles for our beautiful Bay Area. In the film version, we meet the same characters as the series, only now they're way beyond successful, buying every toy possible. Unfortunately the funny females have disappeared replaced by the sad, young girls who are stand ins for the adolescent boy-joy fantasy. Entourage is sure to make money for the younger male demographic as well as overseas. If you have a daughter or friend thinking of making it in LA, this is good warning of how the game is played. There's some laughs and good characters, but this one is as empty as a one night stand.

Once in a while we are just in the mood to laugh. Spy is not hysterical, but will provide some guffaws. It's a James Bond parody with Jude Law as the coolest CIA agent, able to take out enemies and yawn at the same time. Melissa McCarthy is helping him back at headquarters trying to save his life so he'll realize how wife worthy she is. To save him she goes rogue, to France and Hungary, meeting up with sexy and very funny Rose Byrne. Jason Statham reminds us that he plays comedy as well as action (see The Bank Job). A little too much blood and heaving, but still a good comic escape. The film is grounded by McCarthy and she is terrific.
